The Norwegian Language & Living course is perfect for you who want to experience the culture, learn a bit Norwegian, and explore Europe. Through conversations, a lot of different activities and travels, you’ll improve your language skills while discovering what makes Norway unique.

Cultural immersion every day
You’ll experience Norwegian traditions, lifestyle, and social customs up close. From shared meals to hikes and creative projects, you’ll get to live like a local while building strong connections with classmates.

History and identity
Learn about Norway’s journey from its Viking roots to modern democracy, exploring how history, nature and culture shaped its national identity. You’ll gain insight into the Viking heritage, traditions and World War II resistance that still influence Norwegian society today.

Hovden winter experience
We travel to Hovden, a true Norwegian winter paradise, and stay in a cozy cabin surrounded by mountains and snow. Here, you’ll cook, relax by the fire, play cards, and practice Norwegian in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
Interrail through Europe
The highlight of the year is an Interrail trip through Europe, where you’ll explore several countries, cities, and cultures by train. This journey gives you a broader understanding of Europe while strengthening the friendships you’ve made.

Learn Norwegian in real-life settings
You’ll practice speaking, reading, and writing Norwegian in authentic situations — in class, in the community, and during travels. This hands-on approach helps you grow confident in using the language naturally.

Meet real vikings
Experience history firsthand by visiting an authentic Viking village, where you’ll meet people who live and breathe Viking culture. Through crafts, storytelling and reenactments, you’ll feel how Norway’s past comes alive in the present.

Norwegian food and traditions
You’ll learn about Norwegian cuisine and seasonal dishes, and even cook traditional meals together. This gives you both language practice and a true taste of Norwegian hospitality.
Relaxation and recovery
On the last day, we visit Hovden’s indoor water park, featuring water slides, hot tubs, and a sauna. After a week of outdoor adventures, this is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy warm comfort together.

Snow fun and creativity
Enjoy sledding, snow games, and building snow forts or lanterns, as well as snow sculpture making. These activities combine play, teamwork, and creative expression — all while learning new Norwegian words.

Winter adventure in Norway
As part of the program, we embark on a Norwegian winter study trip — included in the tuition — to experience snow, skiing, and mountain life. This is a week of fun, teamwork, and immersion in Norwegian culture.

When choosing the line , you also get the option to combine it with one of the lines below.
At Karmøy Folkehøgskule you get a very special school year where you choose two of our 20 lines — and follows both throughout the year. This gives you over 190 possible line combinations, so you can create a year that suits exactly your interests.
You have approximately 40 line days on every line. The rest of the time is filled with common subjects, electives and theme days that provide variety and community in everyday life.
