After the folk high school year
When can I apply?
Applications usually open on October 1st for upcoming school years. You apply via the online application form. From November 15th we will be able to enroll. Those who apply first are first in line. Read more below.
When will I know if I've been enrolled?
We enroll continuously from November 15th until the start of school or until the school is full. You will receive replies to both SMS, email and letters in the mail. Read more below.

How much does a year at a folk high school cost?
It depends on which 2 courses you choose, as there are different prices depending on the destination and activities the courses have. See total cost overview below.
What do I get from Lånekassen, and how do I apply?
Folk high school years are eligible for grants andloans. You apply digitally via the Lånekassen website. Portions of the loan can be converted into grants upon completion of the year. Read more below.

How does the school work with inclusion, safety and the environment?
Each year we have 2nd year students who have an important role in creating a good environment, starting activities in the afternoon and being available for help and support. The school also has its own environmental worker, social teacher and other staff who are there for the students. There is at all times one supervisor (teacher) present in the school in the afternoon/evening and at night.

What destinations does the school offer?
Each course has its own trips both domestic and overseas. We have many exciting destinations all over the world. With 2 courses you get more trips abroad! Trips vary from course to course — read more under each individual course page. We also have a great joint trip to Preikestolen early in the school year.
Do we have classes on weekends?
Yes, there are classes on Saturdays (theme day) and leisure on Sundays. Theme days have varied content and reflect both current themes and important values. We cover everything from sustainability and mental health to culture and creativity — often with exciting guest lectures! Some Saturdays during the year are free.
How are the rooms at school?
We have the most double rooms with en suite bathrooms. We also have some single rooms that give priority to those who have special needs. 4-5 rooms share a common small living room, and the residential buildings also have a common small kitchen and laundry room in the basement. Can I have a private room?
Yes, you can send wish in advance. Single rooms are given priority to those who have special needs.
How are the meals at school?
Breakfast, lunch (packed lunch), dinner and supper are served daily in the dining room. On Fridays, we usually serve hot lunch. The kitchen serves a variety of dishes, both traditional home cuisine and international cuisine. Read more about school food below.
Do you have a gym or arrangements with a local fitness center?
What happens at school in the afternoons?
In the afternoons, you decide for yourself what you want to do. If you want, you can participate in various activities with students, 2nd year students or supervising teacher. You can also step back a bit if you want time for yourself. Read more about facilities and leisure activities below.

How is my year documented?
Does the school have a 2nd year programme?
Yes, Karmøy Folk High School offers a 2nd year programme. The 2nd year students are former pupils who return for an additional year. They remain students, but with added responsibility for the school environment, wellbeing, and practical day to day tasks.
The 2nd year students are announced during the school year, and all students may apply. Being a 2nd year student provides valuable leadership experience.
What do you get from a year at folk high school?
Without pressure from grades, you will have time to become more confident in yourself, build good friendships and test new things. Experiential journeys, good communities and a sense of mastery. Many people find direction in study choices and face further studies with more motivation and ability to carry out. A folk high school year is a good investment in yourself!
