Neon: Art & Design
Tokyo & Kyoto
Throughout the year at Neon: Art & Design you get to explore a wide range of art forms and expression. You will learn techniques in, among other things drawing and paints, and get room to develop your own style. We work with both classical, analogous methods and digital tools, inspired by everything from traditional art and illustration to Japanese aesthetics — both modern and historical. One of the highlights of the year will be the study trip to Japan.

Cabin trips and creative camps
During the year we go on cottage tours and creative camps, where the environment gives you the peace of mind to create and collaborate across lines. You will get both natural experiences and time for immersion in your own projects.

Ceramics and clay
The work includes sculptures and applied arts made in ceramics and clay, allowing you to create tangible works with creative possibilities. You will get to know the properties of the material and learn holistic production from idea to finished product.
Digital arts and technology
You learn to create expressions with, among other things Procreate and digital art, and get to use 3D printing and new technologies in art projects. This gives you expertise across analogue and digital creative work.

Exhibitions and projects
You will have the opportunity to exhibit your own works at a line exhibition and work on projects based on your ideas and ambitions. This gives you ownership and experience of the arts as an expressive practice.

Food and culture
Discover the culinary world of Japan with sushi, ramen, tea ceremonies and street food. Food culture offers a new perspective on how aesthetics, craftsmanship and sensuality characterize Japanese everyday life.

Japanese traditional art
The teaching also covers calligraphy, prints and aesthetic expressions from Japan, so you understand the roots of visual language. By combining tradition and modern techniques, you get a broader perspective of art.

Manga and anime
You get to work with manga and anime style, character designs and visual expressions inspired by Japanese popular culture. This gives you technical expertise and creative understanding for a global field of art.

Street art and neon
An important expression on the course is street art & neon, where you play with colors, light and large formats in urban and artistic contexts. You develop the ability to communicate visually through scale, medium and audience.

Sustainability in the arts
An important theme on the line is sustainability, reuse and green design, where you learn to use materials and ideas thoughtfully. You discover how art can inspire a more conscious and responsible lifestyle.

TeamLab Planets
In Tokyo we visit TeamLab Planets, an interactive museum where light, sound and space create an experience like entering another world. Here you become part of the arts and experience how technology and creativity merge.

When choosing the line , you also get the option to combine it with one of the lines below.
At Karmøy Folkehøgskule you get a very special school year where you choose two of our 20 lines — and follows both throughout the year. This gives you over 190 possible line combinations, so you can create a year that suits exactly your interests.
You have approximately 40 line days on every line. The rest of the time is filled with common subjects, electives and theme days that provide variety and community in everyday life.
